Spotify says it pulled more than 50 million AI "slop" and spam tracks out of recommendations this year, on top of 75 million it deleted outright. On Tuesday, it also signed Believe and TuneCore onto its AI remix tool. That second part is the interesting one. Fans will be able to make AI remixes and covers inside Spotify as a paid Premium add-on. Every remix links back to the original track, and the artists and rights holders behind it get paid when it streams. Artists have to opt in; it isn't automatic. That's pretty close to what I've been arguing for: declare the AI derivative, credit the original artist, and pay them. It beats playing takedown whack-a-mole forever. Open question: will a licensed remix button actually pull fans away from the free, unlicensed remixes on TikTok and YouTube? Or does it just become one more subscription upsell?
